Bernhard Schmid studied biology at the University of Zürich (UZH) where he received his PhD degree in 1980. After postdoctoral stays in North Wales and at Harvard University he was Professor of Conservation Biology at the University of Basel before becoming Professor of Environmental Sciences and founding director of the corresponding Institute at UZH. Since 2018 he is part time at the UZH’s Department of Geography and at Peking University’s Institute of Ecology. His main research interests are experimental plant ecology and biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships.

In the early 1990ies, Bernhard Schmid convinced fellow scientists in Switzerland to initiate the world’s first integrative biodiversity research program aimed at understanding the functional significance of biodiversity from the molecular to the landscape scale. Following this was the creation of the Swiss Biodiversity Forum, with this science-policy interface organization being the forerunner of similar organizations in other countries. Invited by ICSU and UNESCO in 2001, Bernhard Schmid was co-chair of the task force which led to the launch of the 2nd phase of DIVERSITAS, an international program of biodiversity science, which is now followed by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). Bernhard Schmid played major roles in the conception, design and analysis of large-scale, long-term biodiversity experiments including the EU BIODEPTH project, the Jena Experiment, and the BEF-China platform. This work fundamentally transformed ecology, both with its discoveries, and by making it a more internationally networked and collaborative subject able to tackle global questions.

Bernhard Schmid has published over 500 peer-reviewed journal articles, including numerous in the Nature and Science magazines. He has supervised 96 diploma/MSc students, 77 PhD students, and 38 postdocs. Of those, 25 have advanced to becoming professors and many others now hold senior positions in academia, private industry, and public service. From 2005–2012 Bernhard Schmid served the scientific community as Research Council member of the Swiss National Science Foundation. From 2009–2016 he worked in the Dean’s Office of the Science Faculty of UZH as Vice Dean and Dean (2014–2016) and from 2020–2021 he worked at the UZH Vice President for Research’s Office as an adviser.
